ABSTRACT
The time period considered in this work stretches over five centuries. It engages with the fortunes of two very different states and the distinctive platforms they established to consolidate and sustain their commercial empires. It is a study of some essential elements of the Cis-Atlantic realm, namely port cities and the trading conjunctures and political economies that helped to shape their functional, morphological and social evolution.
