ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the various container terminal operations in more detail. The operations can be categorised as seaside, transportation, or landside operations. The chapter shows how the literature in each of those areas can be classified and have provided a sketch of the challenges encountered in modelling and solving the problems presented. Container vessels are scheduled to visit a set of container terminals along their route. Import containers will be unloaded from the vessel while export containers will be loaded at each terminal. Most container terminals have berths that allow (un)loading operations from a single side of the vessel. This type of berth is typically called a traditional or a marginal berth. Indented berths are an alternative to traditional berths that allow quay cranes (QCs) to operate on a vessel from more than one side.
