ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the idea of synchromodality, closely linked with intermodality. It discusses the current position and evolution of intermodal hinterland transport systems. The chapter describes the main elements of a synchronised intermodal transport system. It treats the innovations that are necessary to arrive at synchromodal transport systems and the barriers for future development including technological, economical and institutional aspects. The chapter explores the main system changes for synchromodality. It distinguishes system changes at different levels. The business value of synchromodality lies in the increased added value of transport services through a better alignment of supply to demand, based on dynamic information about preferences and expected transport service performance. The integration of modalities requires new organisational and legal arrangements. This is primarily because synchromodality may give rise to new business models and the change of roles in hinterland transport.
