ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses port performance indicators (PPIs) with respect to social-economic and environmental issues and the role of government. PPIs are used in three focus areas: economics and finance, operations, and development needs. The measurement instruments are operational efficiency, cost efficiency, and economic effectiveness to serve various objectives, such as internal management control, communication to stakeholders, marketing tools to attract business, and a basis for comparison between ports. Information technology is extensively used for record keeping, transactions, communications, and the development of PPIs. Developing a host of PPIs designed to address different segments of the operation and blocks will provide important assistance in tracking and/or improving performance. PPIs are statistical instruments developed to determine performance, usually in order to improve management and control. The community and the terminal management should cooperate and collaborate in identifying environmental issues and work together to mitigate their impact. Environmental PPIs could be used to determine the status of the environmental changes and impact.
