ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes knowledge management in organizations. Knowledge is recognized as a strategic asset with a potentially enormous worth. It is seen at a strategic level as a vital source of value generation and competitive advantage. The chapter defines knowledge, the knowledge base, and experience. It relates knowledge management to issues of structure, relationships, and trust. It also looks at the creation and sharing of knowledge within the organization, in order to achieve enterprise objectives. The chapter then deals with the strategic management of technology and innovation. It describes technology and innovation as critical sources of competitive advantage, and analyzes some of the sources of innovation. Demographic variables have a major impact on what is bought, by whom, when, and in what quantities and hence create opportunities for innovation.
