The Notion of Progress – Its Application and Ramifications

Today the notion of progress, as we have discussed in the preceding chapter, is insidiously pervasive not only in Western culture but also in most if not all nonWestern cultures. One consequence is that, colonized peoples all over the world share one indelible experience: physical and cultural extermination. With regard to Indigenous Peoples John Bodley wrote, ‘Progress led to an unprecedented assault on the world’s [indigenous] peoples and their resources’ (1990: 4-5).
