ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on political situations that arise in project environments. It presents some theoretical concepts of human behaviour. These models consider aspects such as psychology, influence, behaviour and communication. The ability of individuals to work together and manage relationships to facilitate the delivery of a project can be a major factor in determining project success. Politics and the personalities of those involved can be a greater influence in making a project successful than the project management skill base of the team. The term politics is often used in a project environment, where it also refers to the way in which projects are governed. Projects, by their very nature, are often unique activities. On projects, both the formal and informal processes and the situations which arise are considered part of the politics.
