ABSTRACT

From the relatively high percentage of failed projects, it would appear that a large number of organisations do not learn from their failures, or at least do not learn enough from their failures to prevent reoccurrences. This chapter discusses the importance of creating the right atmosphere for trust and sharing. Interestingly, N. Dixon suggests that the reason that organisations do not learn is because they are unable/unwilling to create environments where freedom, equality and respect coexist. The chapter explores why organisations don't learn is that simplistic but there is no question that the culture and environment of the organisation play a crucial part in determining how and if an organisation learns. It focuses on the contribution that organisational culture and climate make towards organisational learning and given that leaders shape the culture of the organisation, it is worth just saying a few words about them.
