ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on coaching as a leadership style and the underlying skills required for any form of coaching. It discusses one of the most popular models to be utilised in coaching. The chapter explores more specifically at team coaching. Coaching evolved from the world of sport and it provides a way of relating to a team member in a manner which facilities and encourages the team member to find his or her own solutions to problems. It helps team members to explore problems and to take responsibility for their own actions. There are many different coaching models in existence depending on the knowledge and sophistication of the coach; however, a good one to start with is the one that is most commonly cited, that is, the GROW model. This is a model quoted by John Whitmore. It is an easy model to use and ideal for anyone who is new or relatively inexperienced in the field of coaching.
