ABSTRACT

Working life can be fraught with conflict, some of which is easy to resolve and some of which takes a lot more time and effort. Unfortunately, project management has a huge propensity for conflict simply because there are numerous interdependent relationships and projects often cross organisational and managerial boundaries. Conflict resolution focuses on addressing the roots of conflict and changing attitudes so that behaviour changes and relationships become less hostile and more favourable. Bradford University suggest that the process of conflict resolution includes becoming aware of a conflict, diagnosing its nature and applying appropriate methods in order to: diffuse the negative emotional energy involved and enable the disputing parties to understand and resolve their differences, so as to achieve solutions that are not imposed, which have been agreed by all the key parties, and which address the root causes of the conflict.
