ABSTRACT

Urban spaces are meeting, sharing and communication places where all citizens can go without any discrimination and get together. Within this scope, urban spaces are expected to have a unique characteristic that unites all different groups living in the city, and that enables all these groups to communicate and meet with each other. The mosque yards were regarded as the most important urban spaces. Squares were open areas, formed by use within the urban tissue, and had an organic shape. These areas were mainly used by men, as a consequence of women's subordinate social roles. A change of the Ottoman social and spatial structure started with the proclamation of the republic, which meant a new modern order of social life. Ankara Palas is a type of hotel where the group called the New Ankara Citizens pursued their social activities, representing the modern life.
