ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the disaffection within the formal organisation of the school has highlighted the important but unintended consequences of schooling, as distinct from the official aims of education. Interest in male disaffection stems from official figures which report that secondary aged boys are four times more likely to be excluded from school than girls. There is an element of intimacy with shared humour but the negative side of male disaffection also encompasses a 'fuckin' mad' role which is displayed in dangerous criminal behaviours such as joyriding and violence. However, fundamental flaw in this sort of response is that it is reliant on a fixed, homogenous notion of masculinity while laddism represents a particular type of masculinity based around working class boys. Disaffection had in part equipped pupils with the behavioural patterns they needed in order to survive in their current and likely future situations.
