ABSTRACT

At Ethyl Common School, there was a more extreme example of the caretaker's role being changed to work offsite within the behaviour unit. Michael: Asked teacher if he was daft and offered to drop his kegs so he could see his turd Teachers that took a relaxed approach were able to sustain social order, by disguising discipline within jokes, or just plainly acting daft. Pupils would aggressively exclaim to teachers and each other 'Are yer daft?' or 'sick in head?' Poor behaviour with its connotations of being deficient and needing compensatory measures had real effects for pupils' motivation. The school and classroom is structured by particular norms, assumptions, goals and styles of interaction which are widely accepted and unchallenged. Finally, we need to get away from the idea that children are simply robots to be moulded into scholastic successes.
