ABSTRACT
This chapter begins by politically framing the movement and It traces its historical development, before analysing the increasing support in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) communities for same-sex unions. It is liberating in the sense of achieving a tangible right after years of glumly sitting through weddings that flaunted the superiority of heterosexual relationships. In New York City's daily newspapers around the time of the 2013 Supreme Court verdict that effectively gave the go-ahead to same-sex marriage in California, an extraordinarily wide range of wedding-related businesses could be seen hawking their services. One enterprising photographer announced his diversification from heterosexual weddings, of which he had shot some 1500, including that of celebrities Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. In light of all the evidence, one possible conclusion is that, after stirring opposition to marriage, monogamy, and conventional meanings of love, many in the LGBT community have come to settle for dominant interpretations.
