ABSTRACT

A cursory look at HT membership will reveal it embodies a kind of radicalism that is typically middle class in nature. As Esposito notes, this is not entirely surprising since radical actors are often economically privileged and well educated individuals who have become disenchanted by western society. It is interesting to note on Omar Bakri Muhammad's arrival in the UK, Bakri made several observations of the state of Islamic activism that sharply contrasted with those made by Farid. Farid was born and educated in the United Kingdom, with part of his secondary school education at the acclaimed Furzedown grammar school in Battersea. Thus, Bakri's arrival heralded the launch of a sustained campaign on the Muslim youth of Britain. Farid Kassim became the first indigenous member of the UK branch, as he stated: 'There is nobody in Hizb ut-Tahrir (UK) that was around when I was, when it began'.
