ABSTRACT
Robert A.M. Stern is undoubtedly one of the architecture world’s most influential personalities. He is Dean of Yale School of Architecture, director of his own multinational design studio, RAMS, and has worked for some of the most powerful and influential clients on the globe. His work has been both eloquently lauded and sardonically criticised. He has been described as both a polemicist and a conservative, as charismatic and a tyrant.1 His work has been labelled traditionalist, modern, post-modern and historicist.2 He claims to defy categorisation. He is as staunch and intelligent in the defence of his eclectic approach, as his opponents are in their criticism. He has won numerous architecture prizes, written innumerable books and is credited with leading the postmodern movement in its rejection of architectural modernism throughout the second half of the twentieth century.
