ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the most significant drivers impacting how people should respond in developing their workplace. So, if they have well-established guidelines or policies driving their workplace strategy, now is perhaps the time to throw them away. Work has become increasingly enabled by, and dependent upon, technology, which has been the main influence on its development in recent years. And whilst technology is offering ever-increasing new opportunities and options for work - e-work if one like - it is also requiring new understanding and disciplines if it is to be most appropriately optimised. The focus has moved to the intelligent filtering, interpretation and application of data and associated development of working relationships, collaboration and team-work - giving rise to a new breed of knowledge-workers and networkers. The development of home-working policies has been an important, if slow, part of the overall distributed working development. Now various models exist - formal and informal.
