ABSTRACT

In 1970, Michel de Certeau argued that "cultural heterogeneity" would be a challenge for the university—an institution accessible only to a relatively small population of students. The USA was one of the first countries to integrate artistic practice into the university setting. Universities integrate culture into their mission to renew, to develop or to acquire prestige and participate in promoting the country on an international stage. Musical creation, in its form, is also limited in scope, restricted to the particular time and place in which it operates and to which it is intended. In a university context, "doing research" consists of a process of reflection that can only be developed in relation to a specific framework that is often standardized, objective, generalizable and reproducible. The research underpinning artistic creation is obviously not based on academic method, even if thought-process and planning are required and even if an experimental phase exists, as in classical academic research.
