ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book discusses Rolf Gardiner who was an English rural revivalist. Patrick Wright description of Gardiner as 'something of an eminence vert' is relatively easy to substantiate in terms of his institutional commitments, but more problematic in the realm of ideas and influence. By the late 1960s Gardiner could point to a long and sustained engagement in organizations such as the Soil Association. Gardiner combined his role in the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) with his better-known involvement with the Soil Association (SA), of which he had been a founder member in 1946. Rolf Gardiner died on the morning of 26 November 1971 in a Bath nursing home, following a routine operation on his troublesome hip. Like Gardiner, E. F. Schumacher was a member of the Soil Association, serving as its President from 1971 until his death in 1977.
