ABSTRACT

Most towns attending the Country Week (CW) Expos brought along the special editions of their local newspapers, which played a particular role in highlighting the positive features of the regional life, often focusing on the successful transition to the town of some of its recent residents. The most comprehensive accounts of new migrants to the country are those from the CW's website, which well demonstrate the key themes of the success and emphasise the positive characteristics of the newcomers. Small is beautiful might have been the theme of many stories, and small size spilled over into many other benefits: community, friendliness, time savings and easy access to the facilities and the rural scenery. The stories, and pictures accompanying them, highlight successful adaptation to small town life. While these appear as stereotypes, or at least carefully chosen households, certain people may be better migrants.
