ABSTRACT

This chapter aims at presenting and critically assessing the management of Natural Resources (NR) in the Lake Plastiras area in Central Greece. The role of knowledge forms and structures is considered important for rural sustainability. The chapter provides a condensed description of the different national and thematic NR policies in Greece. It describes the study area is presented in brief, along with a discussion of the new economic trajectories, and the attempts to plan the management of NR and the conflicting NR uses in the study area. The chapter identifies the main actors involved in the management of NR are depicted and the role of various knowledge forms within the process of attaining sustainable development. The main actors involved in the management of natural resources and in sustainable development of the Lake Plastiras area are Local Development Agency of Karditsa (ANKA). The compartmentalized nature of the sustainable management of NR is due to the project-based interventions.
