ABSTRACT

What is the main point in comparing conservation aims, protected areas and Indigenous peoples across different states? Despite international cooperation efforts, binding treaties and voluntary instruments, legislation and policies may differ considerably among neighbouring countries. Comparisons provide new perspectives on the protected area regimes of other countries, as well as valuable insights relevant to one’s own jurisdiction. The most important result of comparisons is often the reflection concerning the assumptions, historical trajectories and hidden agendas of national regimes, which one does not easily detect without the contrasts with other conservation systems.
