ABSTRACT

A large part of Samuel Bentham's (SB's) time at Krichev was spent building and supervising the construction of vessels. Jeremy Bentham clearly shared in thinking of uses for SB's invention. He contributed also to uses for the method SB conceived for facilitating supervision of his workers, mainly peasants and soldiers. In May 1787 SB was called away from Krichev to attend Catherine II on her progress around her new southern territories. Jeremy accompanied him to Propoisk, about 80 miles south of Krichev by the River Sozh. After parting at Propoisk, Jeremy returned to Krichev where he remained for much of the rest of 1787 before returning to England. The galley had been under development since SB's arrival at Krichev. He had shared his ideas with Jeremy over the winter of 1784-85, and his brother had put them to the Admiralty model maker, Thomas Birket, in Chatham dockyard, with whom SB had spent much time during his apprenticeship.
