Given the gravity of the social and environmental issues facing high-risk coastal communities, it is essential that academics, agencies, and communities find common ground to respectfully listen, engage, and respond. For too many years, rural, out-of-the-way communities have been either left out of the process of studying problems with academics and agencies, or have been informed through such ineffective means as study results being deposited in pamphlet form at public libraries.
