ABSTRACT
At Albanum, permanent base of the legio II Parthica, the military presence is remarkable. Some inscriptions do not refer to legionaries, but rather to soldiers belonging to other corps, and more specifically to the equites singulares Augusti and praetorians. If the presence of the praetorians and equites at the side of the emperors was predictable, less expected was the one of soldiers of the fleet and vigiles; although equally justifiable. While accepting the idea that among the duties carried out by the classiarii at the praetoria there also was the one of courier, still there is no explanation for their absence at other residences where the emperor certainly was engaged in administrative activities. The inscriptions of urban troops in Praeneste are about a dozen and cover the entire time span of the imperial era. The bulk is represented mostly by praetorian guards, belonging to different cohorts.
