Police culture has been the subject of much research and debate because it has
affected how police officers do police work. As a consequence problems have
emerged in how and to whom they exercise discretion and the rights of citizens
have been undermined (Reiner 2000a). Similarly it will be shown that the culture of
security officers also affects the way they undertake their work. However, in the case
of the two research sites the implications of their culture focused upon undermining
what the security officers were supposed to do and ultimately their effectiveness.
