ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the kinds of goals Strategic Learning Contracts (SLCs) contain, and the different formats in which the SLC can be presented. It explores some of factors that make goals especially useful in the context of learning and development. The Self Managed Learning approach provides an integrated and coherent context for learning and personal development. A Strategic Learning Contract is designed to be strategic in that participants on Self Managed Learning programmes are encouraged to take a strategic approach to their own learning. Appraisals often lead to the formulation of a Personal Development Plan (PDP). These are sometimes seen as having same value as a Strategic Learning Contract. Within an SML programme a far wider variety of options is possible, and these are reflected in a person's Strategic Learning Contract. An SLC begins with individual making their own choice of goals. This may be within constraints, such as theme of the programme, or even an imposed competency framework.
