ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of the book. The book describes a new approach for research of the Roman empire by focusing on the sensory properties and affectiveness of its material culture and generated by its written sources. It illustrates how taking a sensory approach to specific aspects of Roman society and culture enriches and increases the understanding of their significance and brings new perspectives to the interpretation of the Roman world. The book explores the possibilities for reconstructing sensory experiences of objects, environments and events, and develops the understanding of the construction and character of particular spaces, through analysis of their sensory properties. A wealth of evidence for the Roman empire enables sensory studies to present a more embodied understanding of Roman society and culture.
