ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the current situation of African Traditional Religion (ATR), to give an account of the main tenets of the religion and to demonstrate that it is a sensible and truly African response both to God as Creator and to God's creation. The dawn of democracy in a post-colonial and post-apartheid South Africa has brought many changes in the understanding and scope of the term religion'. The consequence is that equality has not been given to the various traditions within a multicultural and multi-religious society; the status of an indigenous spirituality has been compromised. People who practice ATR believe in the existence of the Supernatural Power who created life and the earth. The liberation of ATR in the post-colonial country has not only brought joy to ATR adherents but has also given freedom to charlatans who cause distortions regarding the content and significance of the religion, especially in the field of divination.
