ABSTRACT

Michael Kaler presents "The Words That Maketh Murder'. The instrumentation of 'The Words That Maketh Murder' includes lead and backing vocals, an autoharp, a trombone an acoustic guitar a slide guitar and drums. The drums and guitar are, of course, unexceptional for rock music, while the autoharp gives the song a distinct sound, which distinguishes it from other works of the genre and also tags it as being by Harvey, since the autoharp has become something of a trademark for her over the past seven years. This playful subversion happens on two levels the structural level and the micro-rhythmic level. The container schema is also interesting in terms of the song's harmony. The lyric quotation marks a clear intertextuality, but it is up to the listener to decide which, if any, of the other features will be understood as intertexts. The ambiguity in 'The Words That Maketh Murder', provide a loose amalgamation and conceptual metaphor.
