ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the challenges of pastoring in the New York/New Jersey area. Challenges that appear very pressing include the following. Firstly, it asks the question that what kind of church environment is best suited for the average Indian Christian. Secondly, another pressing concern of Indian Christian pastors and lay people are the challenges of adapting to the salad bowl' of American culture. The chapter sets out the 2007 Princeton Consultation focus on facets of what Catholic theologian Peter C. Phan has called the betwixt and between' reality of immigrant communities. The social and cultural effects of living in the United States can also be deleterious to community health. The fate and future of the second and third generations produce a special kind of anxiety on the part of all Indian Christians, no matter what the caste background. Dalit Theology as it has developed over the last three decades in India is distinct from the Euro-centric theological approach to Christianity.
