ABSTRACT

The streets of the city are all drawn by a line very straight, without any manner of making a nook or winding. The principal streets are something broader than the Rua Nova dos Mercadores 'dos ferros' of Lisbon. The principal streets have triumphant arches which do cross them, high and very well made, which make the streets very beautiful and ennoble the city. The houses of the magistrates are very sumptuous at the entrances, with high portals, great and well wrought of mason's work. They have in the fore-front very great gates like the gates of a city, with two giants painted with clubs in their hands. Besides the principal houses of the chief governors, there are many others in Cantam of other inferior officers the which though they be not of so great majesty as these, they are notwithstanding very great, and chiefly those of the chief jailer which are very great.
