ABSTRACT

Grindr is the modern-day, real-life Cerebro, which instead of tracing mutants, discloses gay men. Where previous Internet technologies were completely stationary, tying users to a particular location such as a desk, mobile apps like Grindr possess cyborgean qualities that go beyond their mere prosthetic condition. Grindr addresses issues related to gay identity and the built environment, when one considers histories of gay subculture and its correlation with spaces or rather, lack of. Although Grindr is used for a vast number of reasons, it is most notoriously known to be used as the digital substitute for gay cruising the act of walking or driving in particular areas looking for a sex partner. The gay man's only option was to seek pleasure within the sex-zones of the city. These zones included the parks and lay-bys as identified by Califia, but also the homosocial spaces of locker rooms, toilets, prisons and dormitories.
