ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the notion of place as having spiritual importance for many people, and argues discussing place can be a way of opening up conversations of a spiritual nature. It demonstrates that the notion of place is often far from straightforward for both social workers and those they work with. The chapter considers a range of different aspects of place and how they relate to notions of spirituality. The characterisations of national or regional spiritualities can however be problematic if imputed onto individuals. The virtual world as a place for spirituality is still in its infancy as an idea, and remains an anathema for many, There are probably very few people who have not at some time been impressed with some feat of building. However, urban spaces have historically been less likely to be associated with notions of spirituality than natural environments.
