ABSTRACT

To Vermont Secretary Deborah Markowitz, being beholden to the voters of her state involves recognizing common values that the citizens in her state share. Missouri Secretary Robin Carnahan similarly points to her principal goal as being to serve the voters by making the elections process 'efficient and accessible' and one that earns the confidence of her citizens. Iowa Secretary Michael Mauro similarly points to his demonstrable commitment to protecting the democratic process as the reason he was able to successfully advocate for a multiple of groundbreaking reforms in his state, like Election Day Voter Registration. Voters who wish to see elections that are accessible to all and produce accurate reflections of the people's will cannot overlook their important role in the process. Just as it is crucial for these principles to guide our Secretaries, it is critical that voters support and work with Secretaries of State to ensure that their goals and principles are reflected by whoever occupies that office.
