ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the process through which tourism destination management organisations were established in Hungary from 2005 to 2009. It focuses on the development of the destination management organisations (DMO) in Veszprm, an historic city in the Central Transdanubia Region of Hungary, a popular destination with both domestic and foreign tourists. The chapter examines a transfer of power and authority from a previously established voluntary partnership to a statutory DMO. The researchers have observed the establishment of the Veszprm tourism association (VTA), which as we will show can be considered the preliminary stage of the development of the Veszprm DMO. With the establishment of the DMO, the members have become legally bound to the collaboration agreement, but could see the dangers of it falling apart even before it could start operating properly due to the lack of funds.
