The earliest English poems in carol form

Contrary to received opinion, the carol form is very rare indeed before about 1410: most of the earlier examples prove, on closer examination, to be nothing of the kind. There are a few solid cases, but they are so scattered as to resist patterning. And then suddenly there are many carols in the Trinity carol roll and in the personal collection of John Audelay.
