ABSTRACT
The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) defines domestic violence as an act or pattern of violence perpetrated by an individual against a family or household member not done in the defence of self or others. In violence examination, the United States Office of the Inspector General found that the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) regularly failed to investigate domestic violence complaints against its officers. Most recently, researchers examined published newspaper articles in an attempt to provide updated and comprehensive statistics regarding officer-involved domestic violence (OIDV). For the general public, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) state that a substantial proportion of the US population has suffered from such violence, with both women and men being victimized. Traumatic stress theory, or post-traumatic stress theory, indicates that when a person is exposed to violence or the threat of injury or death, he or she undergoes a two-state response: intrusion and avoidance.
