ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the effective leadership as an intervention to reduce police officer stress, it is first necessary to define bad leadership in order to gain an understanding of what effective leadership looks like, as well as address bad leadership as a significant source of police officer stress. It proceeds to define and describe effective leadership and how the effective police leader might play a role in the reduction of officer stress. The chapter relates how an ineffective leader fails to create a productive working environment in which subordinates are motivated, demonstrate initiative, find their work rewarding, and are professionally developed to their fullest potential. It demonstrates that both toxic leadership and ineffective leadership produce significant stress for subordinate personnel. The chapter also presents the trait and habit is central to how and why effective leadership serves as an intervention for police officer stress.
