ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the experience of burnout among police officers. It considers gender differences in police officer burnout and interventions to reduce levels of police officer burnout. Burnout is important for several reasons: it may be widespread, related to important individual, organizational and 'client' outcomes, and it may be possible to reduce the prevalence and costs of burnout as we come to know more about it. Causes of burnout include individual factors, 'client' factors, and organizational factors. Ronald J. Burke and A. M. Richardsen offered a broad review of burnout and the burnout literature in this regard. Individual characteristics considered as factors in the experience of burnout included sex, age, personality, and career orientations. Organizational and client factors included workload, role conflict and role ambiguity, professional expectations, participation in decision-making levels of social support, and recognition and reward structures.
