ABSTRACT

Kerala is one of the smaller states in India and lies in the southwest coast of the Indian peninsula. Social movements, have a very strong root in Kerala and the people of Kerala organize and mobilize to support or protest government policies more effectively than others in India. One of the other major protest movements in Kerala is opposing a proposed project on the River Pooyamkutty, a tributary of the Periyar. Although the project enjoys the support of all the major political parties, various protest groups in the state are still successfully opposing it. In Plachimada, the multinational corporation Coca-Cola built a plant to produce and bottle its product for the Indian market. The protest against the Coca-Cola plant was not limited to the local area. Kerala has witnessed a large number of protest movements in recent years. As the Kerala study suggests, it is not only economics or politics that matters in protest mobilization, but also society.
