ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief overview of the case management study and the context within which it was set, and a description of the research design, methodology and the interview schedules and the measures used therein. The Lewisham Case Management Scheme was, in many ways, ahead of the policy agenda of the time in that it examined the benefits and costs of intensive care management, focused upon a specific high-risk target group and linked with a specialist secondary health care service. The focus of the research study was broad, examining the development of the case management scheme within the local service context as well as its impact and practice. The methodology was a quasi-experimental design in which the case management service received by older people with dementia and their carers, the experimental group, was compared to that offered in a similar community team setting without this innovative service, the control group.
