ABSTRACT
There is no topic more important in modern commercial aircraft development than large-scale system integration (LSSI). The large-scale system (LSS) in this instance is the global supply chain. Every aircraft developer contracts with suppliers all over the world for components and other aircraft parts. This international procurement is commonly known as outsourcing, which will be discussed in this chapter. Commercial aircraft are part of other LSS, such as the global navigation system and the air traffic control (ATC) system. But this chapter will focus primarily on the global supply chain since it is the sources of the greatest risks and is in need of the greatest degree of management, both technically and organizationally.
