ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a description of the Ghanaian community in the British West Midlands and in southern Italy. The goal is to assess whether there are aspects of the migratory experiences of Ghanaians in the USA that parallel the experiences of immigrants from Ghana who have settled in the UK and Italy. The formation and continuity of the Ghanaian diaspora is going to reflect the incorporation and synthesis of new ways of thinking, feeling, and acting. The added advantage of living in a European Union country is that it provides the immigrants with additional safeguards from human rights abuses and the exploitation of workers and residents. Leaving Ghana to go abroad for a temporary sojourn while waiting for economic and social conditions to improve in the country has become a permanent feature of the Ghanaian diaspora. In sum, an important aspect of the Ghanaian diaspora in the West is the fluidity and dynamic nature of the diaspora.
