ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the story of Cofie, which was told by nearly every Ghanaian. Sending money home has become the most poignant aspect of Ghanaian migration to the United States. Remittance flows or the person-to-person income transfer has become one of the important aspects of the international migration of skilled and unskilled labor from peripheral to core areas of economic and industrial activities. Remittance flows into Ghana have become a major source of finance for imported goods into the country. Institutional remittance flow is certainly one of the main sources of venture capital for the burgeoning private real estate developments in suburbs in Accra such as East Legon, Pokoase, and Tema. In the Ghanaian cultural ethos, giving and sharing one's resources with less fortunate members of the family unit is considered desirable. Immigrants who remit are said to receive blessings not only from the living but also from the departed ancestors.
