ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book addresses the rich and nuanced intersection of modern theoretical approaches to Gower studies and to the medieval underpinnings of theoretical engagements which affect Gower's works. It examines the cultural locations of Gower, not only from geographical and political perspectives, or through scientific and economic context, but also via the transmission of his work through the materiality of the text and its reception. The book focuses on Gower's trilingualism in his texts, on his approach to issues such as history and narratology, and on intertextual and influential aspects of his works. Gower scholarship is becoming ever more rich and varied, reflecting a plethora of issues and interests both medieval and modern. The book presents a narrative and a review of the most recent scholarship on its identified topic, and looks at possible avenues for future work in that area.
