ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses popular music education in relation to ideas of cultural and educational democracy. It focuses on issues of diversity in repertoire and musical genres and on popular music's alleged inherent potential for democratic learning. The chapter overviews the historical, cultural and ideological foundations of the inclusion of popular music in Nordic educational practices; these foundations are closely related to Nordic ideals of equality, participation and democracy. The inclusion of popular music in education is closely linked to ideals of cultural democracy: music education should include various musical styles, and thus mirror the cultural and musical diversity in society. The Nordic education model is based on an egalitarian philosophy and the state's perceived duty to provide equal opportunities for all citizens. Strong democratic ideals appear to have contributed to the widespread acceptance and inclusion of popular music in the Nordic educational systems.
