ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an example of the first wave of curricular changes in the undergraduate music education programme at the University of South Florida, in Tampa, Florida. Leading up to the 2011 Suncoast Music Education Research Symposium's, the music education faculty at the University of South Florida (USF) embarked on some significant changes to the undergraduate music education programme. Change in the music education programme at USF has occurred as a result of the diplomacy of a small group of music education faculty members acting on the vision of countless curriculum reformers in the field over the past several decades. One of the first major curriculum areas that students in Creative Performance Chamber Ensemble engage with is musical performance. Popular music education is simply one component of a much larger and more nuanced movement that is necessary in schools of music all across the United States.
