ABSTRACT

[Mahler] gave the [timpanist, who had left the performance early to catch a train home] the choice of abandoning either the opera or his home in Brunn, but doubtless finally granted him an allowance to help him to move, for it was then that he learned that some of the musicians earned no more than sixty gulden a month, a sum on which it was impossible to live in Vienna, even as a bachelor. 1
