ABSTRACT
The image of a woman with a colourful scarf tied around her head, wearing big hoop earrings, reading a palm, gazing into a crystal ball or deciphering tarot cards is still one of the most common depictions of a female gypsy. By the end of the sixteenth century, fortune-telling, especially in the form of palmistry, was inextricably linked with the gypsy population.
